First impressions count and that applies to the appearance of your building as well as your staff. It’s why stubborn, unsightly stains can be such a problem.
The likes of chewing gum, oil, and graffiti are an eyesore and can drag everything else down.
It’s a dilemma.
Banning chewing gum outright is likely to be a controversial decision. Chewing gum has its benefits. It’s good for your teeth and some studies even suggest it’s good for relieving stress and anxiety.
But it’s NOT good for your commercial premises.
According to Keep Britain Tidy, 95% of the UK’s main shopping streets and 64% of roads and pavements are stained with old chewing gum.
These numbers are staggering.
And it’s a problem because old gum looks ugly and causes an annoyance. It doesn’t biodegrade so it stays there forever. The sticky gum becomes a dust trap, which attracts grime. Worst still, on hot days old gum can melt and stick to people’s shoes.
Graffiti causes a different sort of nuisance. ‘Artists’ see your stairwells and walls as a blank canvas, but as a business owner, it’s not the look you want. Instead, it’s vandalism that you want to be rid of.
Then there’s oil.
Not only can oil leave a stain that’s extremely hard to remove, it can actually weaken the concrete and break it apart.
Oil stains look unsightly and if someone stands in the oil while it’s wet, it can be trodden through your building’s interior.
Now you could argue that all these stains and eyesores are just unavoidable wear and tear.
But we disagree. The truth is there’s plenty you can do to keep your external premises looking almost like new.
It’s a cliché!
It’s always easier to prevent the need for a clean up in the first place, so make sure litter bins are available. This can remove the excuse that there’s nowhere to throw used gum.
When it comes to graffiti, it’s worth exploring anti-graffiti paint when you next decorate. It’s a powerful deterrent.
